Today we met at the church at 10 am for devotions before starting out to the neighborhoods with our flyers. Brian B led the devotion and we had a season of prayer where we asked God to bless our efforts. Then we paired up, were handed detailed maps of the streets where we would go, and set out. We walked up and down the streets of Solihull with the flyers that announce what we are doing this weekend. Rob designed the flyers; they are colorful and easy to read. We pushed flyers through letterboxes and greeted everyone we met on the street with a smile. We distributed about 1,000 flyers in the morning, stopped for lunch, and went out again in the afternoon.
At lunch, we surprised Joe with a birthday cake and singing. He had already been wished Happy Birthday in Dutch at breakfast but received an encore of the song in Dutch (after the English version) before blowing out his candles. I believe he was surprised by the efforts to celebrate with him which began in Charlotte when Alice asked us to get a cake and remember him on his birthday.
Several members of the Solihull congregation are with us all day and night today and we feel like one team with one goal. It is a beautiful day today, a little overcast with a bit of a breeze. In the afternoon we had some time to bond again with ultimate
frisbee and games and pizza for dinner. Then it was off to the local park with our banner, some flyers, diet cokes and crisps to play volleyball, croquet, and football (soccer). This was our first event of the week: games in the park.
We attracted attention (which was the idea) and almost all of us had conversations with people, young and old, who stopped to talk to us or have a free soda. Many of the people we talked to had already seen our flyer because it was delivered to them in the morning! It was a great way to end the day and feel like we will see some people come out to the gathering we have planned for Saturday afternoon.
